I gotta say you guys really keep me on my toes (in a good way mind you) I’m usually plagued with many an email about my AP/AE cards all of the time and now that I’ve put those up for sale…everyone goes crazy commissioning PSC’s. I don’t mind though, I LOVE working up PSC’s. First off, i get the best, most off the wall requests and the card stock of my PSC’s is the bee’s knees, I can get pretty detailed and vibrant on them.

SO, I put up just a couple more AE cards in the store. The first is one of my Autograph cards from 5finity’s Greatest American Hero set that benefited the March of Dimes charity. Its an ultra rare Michael Pare Autograph sketch card of his character Tony Villacana from the TV classic.

The other one i have up is a first for me, Its a jam card that i did with fellow sketch card artist and good friend Jason Worthington. Jason drew the super cute cheerleader defending herself from the gory nerd zombie that i drew on this AE card from the Zombies Vs. Cheerleaders Comic #1 sketch card set.

Soon as I’m done with these PSC commissions i got on my plate i will update with more PSC slots and put some AP/AE blanks up for commission as well. To get you guys thinking, i posted the number of blanks i have below next to the respective set.

Sunday Evening the Atomic Comics closed their doors for the final time. Something i never thought would happen. While over the years, i did not shop there exclusively, it was still an occasional visit and a hub for comic knowledge and community. In my teen years the creator signings hosted at Atomic were incredibly inspiring. Talking one on one with creators confirmed and motivated my decision to pursue a career in comics. After i graduated high school i worked for Hero comics 2 in Mesa, a direct competitor (across the street from the Mesa Atomic) I learned a lot about retail by watching Atomic and competing with them. And after i embarked on a full time career in art, Owner Mike Malve welcomed me into his stores and with the Atomic crew they all supported me more than i could have ever dreamed. Atomic became a sort of home for me,  its employees and customers became like family. Mike Malve personally has gone from sage to mentor to good friend and I owe him a great deal for the support and opportunity he has provided me,  many other creators and industry as a whole.

I want to thank Mike Malve , the entire Atomic comics crew and all the great Atomic customers from over the years for their friendship and support, And i wish you all nothing but the best!  Atomic Comics was truly a worthwhile quest.

Okay so this time around I’m going to answer or rather just talk about some subjects and questions that are always asked to me or brought up to me in conversation. A lot of this just happens to be current comic talking points for which I do have an opinion but I’ll be the first to admit …my opinions are based on limited knowledge i have on said subjects and I personally don’t like sharing my opinions online much, seems like the worst place for them. but these are subjects brought forth frequently so lets do this.

Comic Flicks – I generally do not like Comic book based films and i get asked ALL the time about my thoughts on them. there are a few i don’t mind but in most cases i just don’t like them or the massive hype that precedes and follows them. Comics are just a completely different kind of visual medium, What works well in comics very rarely translates to film in any kind of good way. And I’m not knocking on anyone that enjoys them, whatever floats your boat. And for those that argue comic films are good for comic sales, Show me the numbers. Tens of  MILLIONS of  people watched Ironman for instance and the book only sells at best a hundred thousand copies. But hey don’t get me wrong, from the creator side of things i congratulate those wise enough to make a good business deal and get properly paid for use of their properties. Its one of the only ways Creators can make a truly good living in the comic industry these days…and yeah I’d do it to if the opportunity arises.

The Infamous DCnU 52 relaunch – Hmm well from what I’ve seen it just has not grabbed me in any kind of way. I have become disillusioned with DC and Marvel over the past 6 to 7 years with the style of stories and the marketing of so many titles going from one big event into another. For instance when the whole “Blackest night” thing began I was kind of excited and was going to try and collect the whole thing, then new GL titles came out…TOO many titles for me to even think about staying with from a financial standpoint. even the Trades lacked proper timing or reasonable pricing. So here we are with a property I WANT to read but the marketing/planning of it outed me as a customer. On the other side of things i understand DC, Marvel and all the publishers are in this to do business and make money, as they should. Which is what i believe is driving this new DC launch. There comes a time when the standard costume or look or feel of a character has just run its course in a marketing Sensibility, How many times are you going to sell a standard costume superman action figure before it becomes too played out. Its the reason why Comic movies or adaptations change a characters looks for the films i.e. Green lantern, Transformers. Its so that  new marketing streams can be made from them. incidentally its my biggest pet peeve when creators say the change in looks is due to something else creatively…just be honest, i get it, I’m not a complete moron (pause for laughing to stop). Anyhow the new DCnU is targeted for a new audience …I’m not looking for a new DC so i wont be following the books, it doesn’t upset me because i have tons of great back issues to enjoy and a lot more money to find other books on the shelves that are more to my tastes.

The New Ultimate Spidey – …I’m a pasty white guy, Unfortunately no matter what i think I will still be labeled a Racist …No Comment?

DO you collect sketch cards? – I do not collect sketch cards, not that i don’t want to but I’m afraid I’ll go crazy and subsequently bankrupt if i did. I have been lucky enough to do a couple of trades with some of my favorite artists and i really dig what i have.

Kickstarter – For those of you who don’t know of Kickstarter http://www.kickstarter.com/ A lot of Comics and books are being funded this way as of late, Some really close friends of mine actually use this and I do support them but ONLY because they are friends. Another friend of mine Eric Esquivel summed my feelings up rather eloquently with “Kickstarter is the most annoying thing in the world. It runs on guilt & awkward emails as much as html code.It justifies begging and telegraphs failure. I’m not into it.” I feel like its a cyber version of panhandling. If you don’t want to go through a publisher for whatever reason there is always the option of “SAVING” money up and self publishing…Or even obtaining Investors on a less public forum and retain some dignity in the process.

Okay that’s all for now…Again these are just my thoughts, Ultimately I respect everyone personal opinions and i hope you respect mine.

And because i feel bad if i don’t post some sort of art, Here is a Commission i did for Johnny Knoxville just prior to the Jackass 3d movie release. Did this after i did the Jackass 3d sketch cards with the Hero initiative.

Howdy Jammer folk,

hope you’re all surviving the summer Heat. Here in the AZ. its crazy hot and I had an A/C problem which kept me out of the office for a few days, set me back on work…and web updates…sorry!

I’m currently working on some more sketch card projects right now. One of them Painkiller Jane for 5finity Productions, Character is pretty fun to draw…go figure. I’ve also been doing a lot of writing for two of my creator-owned properties. Having a lot of fun writing this past year, and i hope you guys really dig what we’re cooking up. Yep i said WE. Good friends and talented bad-ass’s John Derrick West and Color Wizard Joseph Baker are on board to Bring “Tin Star Tex” to life. JDW is already a few pages in and they’ll melt your face they’re so good! Cant wait to share some Tex art, but it may be a wait till we can.

Gotta congratulate all my Comic brothers and sisters for surviving a wild San Diego Comic Con, I was not there, After 17 years of attending i need a break from that monstrous behemoth known as SDCC,  Let me know when Hollywood gets bored with it and I’ll be back . Big Congrats to all the Eisner winners and Nominee’s. IDW grabbed a few well deserved wins. I didn’t really hear much about Comic books from the show but hopefully some good stuff is in the works.

Alright folks I’m going to leave you with some Personal sketch card commissions I did recently. Always love the myriad of requests i get, there is usually one or two characters I’ve never drawn before. Love the challenge.

Well i had a great time this past weekend, went down to Gotham City Coffee & Comics smack in the middle of downtown Mesa where they had a weekend long Freedom festival for the 4th of July weekend. Had a great time meeting lots of new people, and as always the G-City crew are awesome! Miguel and Chelsea really bring a fun vibe to the shop as well as Jaime and Tom on the turntables ripping it up on special event nights. And they ended up bringing in some great coin for the Neurological Music Therapy Services Of Arizona, tons of great items were Auctioned off like hard bound Frazetta collections signed by Frazetta even, those were donated by the ever cool Jay Fotos. Brian Pulido also contributed some great stuff to the auction and stopped by during the weekend events. Lots of friends fireworks and various deep fried things i think were food, was a great weekend.

I’ll be back out at Gotham city this Friday 6pm to 10pm for Mesa’s 2nd Friday art walk, so if you missed out you have another shot.

Oh boy, Just when i think i will have a bit of a breather…more work, and I’m not complaining one bit. A little bit of web work, a little more comic work and little more Sketch card work. Fun stuff  that will allow me to put food on the table YAY!

been feeling pretty creative lately Too, and not like a regular creative vibe, but a rejuvenated excited creative vibe. Since I’ve recruited Derrick “dadicus” West’s help with Tin Star Tex, things are really falling into place nicely. I think everyone is really going to like what Derrick is bringing to the table on this because I’m digging it big-time! Derrick’s take on Tex is spectacular and he’s breathing a lot of life into the crazy world i cooked up. We’ll tease some art here when we can, so keep yer eyes peeled.

Now this coming weekend is the Fourth of July And i want to wish you all a happy and safe independence day! Also Friday July 1st i will be out at Gotham City Coffee & Comics for the Charity Auction for Neurological Music Therapy Services Of Arizona from 6pm to 10pm with the auction at 7pm. I have a few things in the auction and I will be on hand with Prints and custom Sketch cards for purchase, its going to be a fun night so come on out to downtown Mesa and join us!
